Biggar Hogmanay Bonfire.
Biggar's annual bonfire arguably sits as one of the most important events of the year!
This annual bonfire takes place not only in Biggar but also throughout many towns
and cities in Scotland.
These events are held to bring in people from not only the local area but from all over the globe!
This tradition dates all the way back to pagan times when it was believed that fire was to bring good luck whilst simultaneously warding off evil spirits. Nowadays Biggar's hogmanay bonfire resembles more of just a social gathering that welcomes the new year and symbolises the idea of
"Out with the old, in with the new"
Every year, on the 31st of December, the party begins... The night begins with a torchlight parade alongside pipers and drummers marching through the town. Once this procession of people arrives outside The Corn Exchange (where the bonfire is found), the bonfire is lit!
This will typically be around 9:30pm each year. This fun and loving environment can sometimes last all throughout the night and into the early hours of the morning, with people singing, dancing,
and just enjoying the warm atmosphere of both the fire and people's energies!
If welcoming social gatherings are for you AND you plan on visiting Biggar at this time of the year... Then you definitely won't be disappointed!
